Training: The Often Overlooked Key to Peak Plant Performance

Years ago, I took a course in Information Technology Management — all about how businesses use computer systems. One concept from that course has stuck with me ever since: the “rule of thirds.” It suggested that the costs of hardware, software, and training should each be roughly equal. The lesson? Most companies don’t invest enough in training.

Operator Training at Nexeed Inc.

Fast-forward about 30 years, and I can see how that same principle applies to Nexeed’s customers today. We put a great deal of focus on hardware — choosing the right equipment and keeping it in top condition. But we also know that operator skill plays a critical role in how well a plant performs. Even the best machines can’t deliver their full potential if they aren’t operated properly. That’s why training is such an essential part of every system we commission.

At Nexeed, training begins as part of our commissioning process, but it shouldn’t end there. Ongoing training keeps experienced staff sharp and helps new employees develop the skills they need to run and maintain your equipment effectively.

Over the years, many of our customers have asked us to return for refresher sessions or to train team members who missed earlier sessions. We’ve provided in-depth instruction on both equipment operation and maintenance — covering everything from optical sorters to mechanical systems.

So what’s the best approach to keeping your team up to speed?

It depends on your needs. Sometimes a quick review is enough — and that might come informally through your Territory Manager during a regular visit. Other times, a dedicated on-site session makes more sense. In those cases, we’ve arranged for our service specialists to spend a day or more at customer sites delivering focused training, often every 1 or 2 years. We’ve even hosted customers at our Manitoba facility for hands-on training on colour sorters — away from the usual workplace distractions.

We can tailor sessions to your needs — whether it’s machine setup and operation, maintenance routines, or overhaul training. We also provide training materials and short seminars that explain the fundamentals of how our systems work, so operators understand what’s really happening when they make adjustments.

The takeaway is simple: training and maintenance go hand in hand in getting the most from your plant.

If you’d like to discuss a refresher or arrange a deeper dive for your team, we’re ready to help.
